After the Beaumont Implosion, Sho-Air/Sonance was looking for some redmeption at the Anthill Criterium on the campus of UC Irvine. The short, three corner course featured a short hill that led out of the final corner to the finish line. Between the hill and the wind, the race was ripe for a break to stick.
Going into the race, the Sho-Air/Sonance riders planned to ride agressively and try to get their riders into position to get a good result. From the gun, the attacks went quickly and often. Cameron Fox and Travis Wilkerson laid down several attacks early and covered others. While a couple of the breaks seemed to have the legs to go, teams not represented in the attacks worked to pull the breaks back.
Just as one break was pulled back, a counter with several strong riders went away. Not wanting to miss the break and be forced to use the team to chase, Brian Kull and three other riders bridged across to what turned out to be the winning break on the day. Thanks to great teamwork in the field from Sho-Air/Sonance and others, the break's gap grew quickly.
NOW and Swamis each had two riders in the break of 12, and played the team game to perfection. Once the break was clear and not in danger of being pulled back, both teams' riders took turns attacking the break. Eventually two groups of two got clear of the break and lapped what remained of the main field leaving the remaining riders to sprint for 5th. Brian Kull came across the line for 8th... one spot out of the money.
Although not quite the result that was hoped for, the Sho-Air/Sonance team rode aggressively as planned. Hopefully the stong legs and aggressive riding will carry over to next weekend's NRC race in Ojai.
