Brian KullA recent returnee to the racing scene, Brian Kull showed that a long break from the bike doesn’t hurt the competitive nature. Feeling some emptiness in his life after leaving cycling to start a family and a career, Brian decided to fill that void with a return to racing in 2007.
After an 8 year absence, Brian returned to the domestic peloton with a bang. In his first race since 1999, he scored a third place in the season opening Boulevard Road Race near San Diego. The rest of the season was icing on the cake.
Serving as a protagonist and loyal team player, Brian initiated breaks, chased down attacks, and looked after the team’s strong sprinters while regaining the feel of racing with as many as 179 of America’s finest bike racers within inches of him. His dedication to the team and work for the sprinters enabled Velosport to bring home many podium places in 2007, including at the renowned San Dimas Stage Race.
As a natural climber, Brian shined in the season’s hilly races. Beginning with Boulevard in February, he put the pain to many Southern California’s finest racers. None of the competitors enjoyed seeing a 135 pounder with a large motor on the start line next to them when miles and miles of climbing were to follow. The thinning of the fields at races such as the San Dimas Stage Race and the State Championships in Bakersfield were due in large part to Brian’s tireless work.
With a season of renewed experience under his belt, Brian and Team Velosport expect even bigger things and better results in 2008. “I wasn’t at my peak throughout any of 2007,” he said. “I didn’t start training seriously until late in the prior summer. It took the majority of the season to get my real race legs under me. Now that I’ve got a full season of training and racing under my belt, I will be much more prepared for a successful 2008.”
