Travis Wilkerson

A.K.A.: "Spaz"

Although he’s been racing since 1987 as a fourteen year old junior phenom, Travis Wilkerson is the athlete’s version of a “jack-of-all-trades.” Until recently, bike racing took a back seat to other athletic endeavors, including starring as a collegiate soccer player at Cal State Long Beach. However, once he turned his full attention to the bike, the results came immediately and often. In fact, in just his second year back on the bike full time, Travis won a California State Championship in the criterium.

For most people, a State Championship after less than two years of full time racing would be enough. Not for Travis. In keeping with his competitive personality, he is aiming to repeat as State Champion, as well as try his hand against the best the United States has to offer in Pennsylvania at the National Championships. Those who know him give him as good of a shot as anyone who dares to line up against him at these renowned races.

Most riders Travis’ size shy away from the hills. Travis is the kind of rider that embraces any challenge in front of him. He routinely confronts the pocket sized climbers that show up at road races in support of the Sho-Air/Sonance climbers. His work keeps his teammates fresh for the final climbs, and provides them with the support needed to get results in the season’s many hilly road races against the climbing specialists.

While he is comfortable in the hills, Travis shines on the flat, open road. He has an engine that most riders envy. He is often the driving force in breaks, acting as a protagonist in both criteriums and road races. His disposition to be proactive in races gives him a distinct advantage over those that line up next to him in Southern California. A breakaway group that Travis is in has a great chance to succeed.

Both Travis and his competitors know that he is going to make every race fast and hard. More often that not this leads to a podium finish for him or one of his teammates.
